SUSHI: Everything you need to know about

SUSHI

Is a popular Japanese dish consisting of prepared vinegared rice, which is usually topped with fish, vegetables, and other ingredients. The word “sushi” means “sour”, which reflects sushi’s origins of being preserved in salt. Since Japan is surrounded by sea, seafood has always been widely consumed as well as rice. It was first developed as a type of fast food and remains so to its day.

History of sushi

It is a favorite dish well-known around the world with various types. Most people think it only comes with fish but it can be vegetarian too. Which has a simple and extravagant taste which is why any age people love to eat.

According to sources, it was oriented from china in the 3rd to 5th centuries. In those days it was called Narezushi. Narezushi is said to appear in Japan in the 8th century. Over the years more sushi stalls popped up throughout the world and became popular meals worldwide.

What are the different types of Sushi?

It comes in different forms, depending on how it is prepared. Some can be eaten by hand, or with chopsticks too. And has its shape and unique taste. Depending upon the composition there are certain standard types, and they are listed below:

Narazushi

Narazushi resembles the original form and is topped with fish, rice, and salt. It is preserved for a few months before being eaten. The rice is removed from the refining process, only the fish is eaten.

Oshizushi

Oshizushi is also called “pressed” or ” box” sushi. A wooden mold called an Oshibako is used to make it. Vinegared rice and other ingredients are filled into the box to shape the mold, then the cutting process starts. It is cut into bite-sized pieces that can be eaten with chopsticks.

Inari

It is another type of sushi that is encased in a pouch of fried tofu, and typically has no fish.

Uramaki

Uramaki is filled with fish in the center “inside-out” and rice as the outer layer. It looks like regular maki, created as long cylinders.

Chinese-Zucchini

Also known as “scattered sushi” which is simply a bowl of rice with a mixture of fish with vegetables.

Makizushi

Makizushi is also called “rolled sushi” which includes strips of vegetables and fish. With the strips of fish and vegetables, the rice is rolled inside the nori to make the long cylinder. One cylinder can be cut into six to eight pieces.

Gunkan-Maki

Gunkan- maki is a type that is oval-shaped, wrapped with a strip of nori seaweed, and topped with vegetables and other ingredients.

Nigiri-Zushi

It is the most well-known type which has an oval shape. Nigiri-Zushi is hand–pressed and made from top various ingredients. It includes a slice of fish at the top and is compacted with an oval-shaped mound of rice.

Sushi vs. Sashimi

Some people still think that both are the same food, but they are two different items. Sashimi is identified as a piece of flesh, including plates of seafood and raw food. It is typically draped and garnished with Asian White Radish.

What are other things I see on my plate?

Depending on what you ordered, you might see the soya sauce, gari (ginger pickle), and wasabi (the hot green Japanese plant including horse-radish and mustard).

Recipe for making sushi

Process of making

  1. Cook Japanese rice.
  2. Transfer the rice to the oke.
  3. Shower 1 tablespoon of sushi seasoning.
  4. Mix gently.
  5. Leave the rice to cool.
  6. Cut other ingredients like vegetables, salmons, and avocado.
  7. Place the salmon roll sheet on sushi roller.
  8. Spread the layer of rice over the nori.
  9. Place the slice of cucumber and salmon on the rice.
  10. Roll the mixture with the help of a roller.
  11. Place the California plastic rolls and warp it, then spread rice onto the plastic rolls.
  12. Place the sheet of nori seaweed on top of the rice.
  13. Place the ingredients on nori seaweed.
  14. Spread the mayonnaise and avocado on top.
  15. Again, roll with the roller.
  16. Remove the wrap and sprinkle the sesame.
  17. Roll the slice.
  18. Cut the slice and enjoy.
